The heat transfer occurs due to two main mechanisms: conduction and turbulence. As the hot fluid passes through its channels, it transfers heat to the adjacent plates through conduction. The metal plates then distribute the heat to the cooler fluid flowing on the other side through the process of conduction as well. The fluid flow in the channels is carefully designed to induce turbulence, which enhances the heat transfer efficiency by maximizing the contact between the fluid and the plate surfaces.

The gaskets placed around the edges of the plates provide a seal that keeps the two fluids separate, preventing any mixing. Gaskets also ensure that there is no leakage of fluids during the operation of the heat exchanger.
